Boston Scientific: Pinnacle Pelvic Floor Repair Kit Lawsuit
In Louisiana, a woman has filed a Boston Scientific vaginal mesh lawsuit, based on the claim that the Boston Scientific Pinnacle Pelvic Floor Repair Kit is a defectively designed medical device that caused her to suffer painful and debilitating injuries.
The complaint, Minne V. Mann, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana on October 5. Mann received the Boston Scientific Pinnacle vaginal mesh in January 2010 as a treatment for vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, and other health issues.
The lawsuit states that the Boston Scientific Pinnacle pelvic mesh was defective, leading to permanent physical damage. Mann's suit is in pursuit of compensation from Boston Scientific for damages totaling $1.5 million, including

Recently, the number of women in the United States who have filed a transvaginal pelvic mesh lawsuit against Boston Scientific and other manufacturers has grown. These products are commonly used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, and can lead to erosion, shrinkage, infection, pain, and other complications.

The FDA issued a statement in July, informing consumers and the medical community that they have not found any evidence that vaginal mesh holds any benefits over other treatments for pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.
In spite of a growing number of complaints of serious injury, roughly 75,000 women undergo surgical implantation of vaginal mesh each year.
In August, Boston Scientific issued a Pinnacle pelvic mesh recall due to manufacturing problems, affecting roughly 540 surgical mesh kits that were found to have low tensile strength between the needle and the suture.
In September, the FDA held an advisory panel meeting to review reports of problems with vaginal mesh. While many consumer advocates are calling for a pelvic mesh recall, the FDA panel supported an FDA plan to allow existing pelvic mesh products to remain on the market while additional studies are conducted. Still, the panel also supported the FDA plan to reclassify all vaginal mesh as a Class III device, preventing fast-track approval of these devices without detailed clinical trials to establish their safety and efficacy.
