A tragedy can happen to anyone anytime. As a rule, we are required to express sympathy with the family members. Most people find it difficult and awkward for the reason that, more than 'What to say', 'How to say it' becomes problematic. It is understood to send sympathy letter to the bereaved when someone dies, but sending sympathies to a person you love, someone you're extremely close to can be difficult. When sending a sympathy message to a person or family that you didn't know too well, the emotional significance is not so intense, you are sad for them, but not overwhelmingly so. But if it's a close family or friend to whom you're expressing your sympathies, the feelings are much stronger. It is quite difficult to sit down and write that profound expression without being overcome with emotions yourself.
