At these times, it's a challenge for us to forego using products made of polycarbonates. Nearly all products sold in the market are packed or contained in something made of plastic. We drink from these containers, store food in them, and prepare food for cooking in them. In this era of plastics, it's hard to find containers that are made of glass. A lot of health problems have happened among the old and the young. Eight year old girls having menses never actually happened during my teenage years. It's not news to us if we hear that today because we know that it is because of the BPA that imitates estrogen, the female hormone. An astonishing 90% of the populace, as revealed in scientific investigations, have small traces of BPA in their bloodstream.
In 1891, Bisphenol was created but its production was introduced in the market only in the 50's. The chemical Bisphenol or BPA was leaking from some containers that's why its release to the public was delayed. In science, BPA or Bisphenol A is described as the main ingredient in the production of polycarbonate material. Studies also noticed the adverse effect of bisphenol (even in little amounts), as it imitates the function of estrogen, the female sex hormone, on growing animals. Bisphenol A, branded as "environmental hormone", with traces of it in subjects involving animals and test tube experiments, it was found to be the cause of imbalances in their hormones. Among these effects are cancer of the breast and prostate, early menstruation and modified brain structures. I find it very alarming to think that a lot of our baby bottles and feeders are made of plastic. In fact, it is considered such a dangerous chemical, the Canadian Ministry of Health is taking measures to control exposure to BPA, the first country to recognize the dangers of BPA exposure and do something about it. Folks, the knowledge of the dangers of this chemical has been around for a long time. Dodds and Lawson in 1936 and 1938 were the first to establish estroginicity when they tested it on ovariectomized rats. They added BPA in their consumption. These experiments were shown to even underestimate the affects of BPA on humans.
BPA in plastic production is used for solidifying the plastic and creating a lightweight material that is clear and resists heat, electric conduction and being shattered. Whatever you can think of, polycarbonate is everywhere, from the glass lenses, storage discs, computers, tools, car headlights, sports safety equipment, devices in the medical field, incubators, recycle cups and plates, even the linings in beverage and food cans.
Worldwide use of BPA has reached about three million in metric tons during 2003 as published in the Handbook of Chemical Economics by SRI Consulting in August of 2004.
Decreased BPA exposure can be done in a number of ways. If at all possible, buy your foods in glass jars such as tomato/spaghetti sauce, pickles, but especially tomato because the acid in the tomatoes causes more leakage of the BPA's. Garden fresh fruits and vegetables sold in the market is what you should pick because they do not contain any BPA. Pick soft drinks and juices that are packed in glass bottles. And please, use glass baby bottles.
I use glass or ceramic whenever I can. Do not forget to feed your pets in BPA free containers. There are birdbaths also that are created magnificently in colored glass or ceramic. It's an attraction in the yard for domestic and wildlife creatures to reduce its contact with BPA's and at same time, glass can be recycled. In any case, glass still prevails!
