Wedding Flowers Gone Wild by John E. Williams
What's the hotest trend in wedding flowers? The answer might surprise you, because today personalization is definitely taking precedence over yesterday's traditions.
"The white understated cluster bouquets of Jenna Bush and Chelsea Clinton are still very much in vogue," says Walter Fedyshyn, recent President of the American Institute of Floral Designers, "but so are almost every other style and color scheme. From peaches and pinks to hot tropicals, bright monochromatic themes, and even dark eggplant and burgundy, almost anything goes with today's modern brides."
"Classic elegance remains the norm, with large white bouquets for a clean, fresh look," adds Fedyshyn, "but many brides are opting for more unique colors and textures to set their weddings apart. In the middle of summer, tropical orange, hot pinks, and greens are a refreshing twist. In autumn, deep reds, merlot, and richer colors come in to play."
What are this year's favorite flowers? Don Phillip, President of Phillip's Flowers & Gifts in Chicago, says "Roses, hydrangea, orchids, and calla lilies are at the top of the list." Fedyshyn adds, "Ranunculus, freesia, tulips, and peonies are good options, too." Succulents, berries, and similar botanicals sometimes complete the look. Both designers caution that flower prices vary seasonally. So, consult an experienced wedding florist for the best values.
To personalize wedding flowers even more, brides are also opting in for extra touches, like rhinestones, beading, or vintage jewelry integrated into their bouquet. "Mums, carns, and mixed pastel colors are definitely out," said Phillip. "Everything else that's tasteful, personal, and unique is in." It's all about the bride, and many of today's brides definitely want something more unique.
Today's moms are opting for new looks, too! According to Fedyshyn, "Mothers are moving away from the traditional corsage on the shoulder or wrist in favor of carrying a petite bouquet or pretty cluster of blooms tied with a ribbon."
Creativity and color abound even more with reception flowers. Popular styles include vintage, romance, high style, classic casual, natural organic, and striking displays of a single flower variety, such as callas or roses. Candles and glass are stylish additions. Look for floating candles, clusters of candles, and flowers submerged in tall cylinders of glass. Alternating centerpieces of different heights from table to table is another great way to create a more visually interesting space.
Fortunately, when it comes to wedding flowers, a little personalization and creativity doesn't have to break the budget. Ask your florist about rental options for glassware, pedestals, plants, lighting, linens, or other decorations, and discuss flowers that can be used at the ceremony then transferred to the reception. Most importantly, get expert advice from an experienced floral designer, but don't be afraid to bring your ideas, too, because your wedding flowers should be every bit as unique and beautiful as you are.
