The History of Light Bulbs by Toby
The light bulb is among the worlds' most vital discoveries. Just imagine what would have been the case without the light of the bulb. Of course you would not have been able even to drive at night. This basically explains why the bulb is the most important. However, the light bulb as it is commonly known today is the work product of more than ten notable UK, Germany as well as American inventors. And this took time over a 182 time period.
It all begun with Sir Humphrey Davy who was an English Chemist in 1809. He noticed that electrify flowing from a battery glowed if passed through a carbon strip. This then gave way to the first arc Lamp. In 1829, Humphrey passed on after being instrumental in inventing and lighting World War 2 trenches.
11 years after Davy, came Warren De La Rue, who was another English inventor. He was responsible for creating a light tube after he passed an electrical current through a filament of platinum that was housed in a tube. This however proved impractical to use due to the high platinum filament costs. In 1854, all eyes were turned towards Germany's direction. The first true light bulb was created by Henricg Globel who was a watchmaker by profession. He used a bamboo filament that was carbonized and which was placed in a glass bulb.
There is every possibility that the tern 'globe' that is commonly used in globe bulbs could have been named after him. Another breakthrough was provided by another German by the name of Herman Sprengel when he invented a vacuum pump made of mercury. This In turn ensured that there is a sturdy vacuum, inside the bulb. This was aimed at removing the oxidation effects hence allowing a longer life of the filament.
But hats went off for American inventor; Thomas Alva Edison. He is accredited with the light bulb development and he was the one who was crowned with the light bulb invention. He went ahead and initiated other notable inventions like the kinetophone (talking motion picture) and the phonograph. His involvements in the light bulb developments saw him come up with a 40hrs burning carbon filament that he kept in a bulb that was oxygen-less. He had in 1880 managed to extend the bulb life to 1200hrs and this was by using a filament that he derived from bamboo.
1906 saw Tungsten pop its head into the world of the light bulb and this was when the General Electric Company of America did a patent of their use. However, these filaments were very costly at that time. There came up an improved method that was used to make Tungsten Filaments in 1910 and this was brought by William David Coolidge who was commonly known as William to his friends and who was an American Physicist. The life of the existing filaments was greatly extended by his improved methods and they were then made more economical. The dark nights are continually being lit up by the light bulb. In 1991, a way to increase a bulb's life to over 60,000 hours was invented by Phillips.
