Restoring Cloudy Headlights Improves Visibility and Safety When Driving. by Robert Roundtree
Gainesville Detailing regularly performs headlight restoration to improve visibility and safety for our customers. One of the most overlooked areas of a vehicle when cleaning are the headlights. Most people do not realize that washing alone will not maintain a headlamps appearance and most will need to be regularly polished to keep from becoming dull, cloudy or yellow over time. There are many over the counter headlight restoration kits that can be purchased from local auto parts stores or mega retailers such as Walmart. While the kits do help improve the appearance of the headlight it is often not enough to complete the job. Having a cloudy headlight is not just a cosmetic issue, it can be a real hazard when driving at night. Studies have shown that visibility can be reduced by as much as 75% and many accidents have come from a lack of visibility due to cloudy headlights. In this article we will explain the process for restoring headlights for better visibility and safety.
The first step in a full blown headlight restoration is wet sanding. Wet sanding is a process where a special sandpaper is used with water to scuff up the plastic on the headlight. Over time headlights that are not regularly polished will begin to dull, fade, crack and turn yellow. Just like everything else in life there is a wide range of headlights with some being more susceptible to deterioration over time than others. To determine what level of sanding is required a good trick is to rub your hand over the headlight to be treated. If the plastic feels very coarse then it will require a lower grit sandpaper and the smoother it is then a higher grit sandpaper can be used. Grit is determined by the number of granules per square inch. We recommend using a grit from 500-4000. The lower the number, the coarser it is. The process will require that you use multiple different grits while progressively getting less coarse.
The first round of wet sanding will be done with the most coarse sandpaper that will be used during the process. After the first round of wet sanding the plastic will begin to smooth out and the surface should be wiped clean and dry. We recommend beginning with a500 grit sandpaper and then moving to a 1000 grit, followed by 1500, 2000, and 4000. At the end of the process the plastic headlight will be very smooth and noticeably clearer although it will still be very hazy. The haziness is from the scratches created during the sanding process. This is necessary to remove the oxidized and yellow portions of plastic that are typically only superficial. After wet sanding the plastic headlight a cutting compound is used. The rubbing compound will further smooth out the surface and begin to really restore the plastic to a clear brilliant finish. After the step with rubbing compound is completed all excess compound should be buffed off with a clean dry microfiber towel. At this point the headlight should be clear of any cloudiness, hazing or yellowing. If there is still some defects present the entire process should be repeated until no evidence of cloudiness is present. The final step in the process is to polish and seal the plastic using a high quality plastic polish and sealant. At the end of this step the headlight will be clear, free of haziness and polished to a high shine.. Although the headlight will look brand new it must continue to be maintained by regularly polishing with a plastic polish each time you wax the vehicle. If the ongoing maintenance is not kept up with the restoration will only last a year or so. The headlight restoration will improve nighttime visibility by as much as 100%.
